Create a Tax Rule

If your community needs to calculate multiple tax rates, a new Tax Rule can be created to assign to different items. In addition, if a tax rate changes, an existing tax rule can be updated immediately or set to update on a future date. This article covers the following topics:

Create a New Tax Rule

To create a new tax rule, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Community button.
     
  2. Select the Taxes tab.
     
  3. Click the New Tax button.
     


 

  1. Name the tax rule in the Tax Description field.
     
  2. Set the Tax Rate percentage for each customer type.

*NOTE: Set a customer type rate to 0.000% if it is not taxed under this rule.

  1. Choose when this tax rule should apply from the Location drop-down menu.
  • Both –The tax rule will be applied to both Dine-In and Dine-Out orders. This default options will be used for most tax rules.
  • Dine-In – The tax rule will only be applied to this customer type for Dine-In orders.
  • Dine-Out – The tax rule will only be applied to this customer type for Dine-Out orders.
  1. The Effective Start Date will default to today’s date. You can postdate the new tax rule if necessary.

*NOTE: Backdating a tax rule will not affect existing transactions. The tax rate of previously sold items must be adjusted manually from the Back Office.
 


 

  1. Click Save and Close.

The new tax rule will now be available to apply to an item in the Back Office. (See step 4 in the article Create an Item.)

 

Update an Existing Tax Rule

To update an existing tax rule, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Community button.
     
  2. Select the Taxes tab.
     
  3. Find the desired tax rule and click the Details button to the left.
     


 

  1. Click the Add button below the current tax rates.
     
  2. Set the new Tax Rate percentage.

*NOTE: Set the rate to 0.000% if the selected customer type is not taxed under this rule.

  1. Select a Customer Type from the drop-down menu.
     
  2. Choose when this tax rule should apply from the Location drop-down menu. (See details of step 6 in the Create a New Tax Rule section above.)
     
  3. The Effective Start Date will default to today’s date. You can postdate the new tax rule if the updated rate should take effect at the future time. (See note under step 7 in the Create a New Tax Rule section above.)

*NOTE: Repeat steps 4-8 for any remaining customer types.
 


 

  1. Click Save and Close.

The new tax rates will begin applying to assigned items on the selected effective start date.
